Capital was based at Euston Tower until 1997, and was originally called Capital Radio. It was launched by Richard Attenborough on October 16th 1973. Capital was taken over by GCap Media in 2005 and moved to Leicester Square, where the famous ‘Capital Radio London’ sign was removed. Due to popular demand the sign was put back January 2006 where it remains to this day. Capital was the second legal commercial radio station to go on air in the UK, a week after the news station LBC. The first song to be played on Capital was Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. When Capital first went live, there were problems with transmission because it shared a frequency with Radio Veronica, a Dutch pirate station. This meant that parts of southern England were unable to tune in. Radio Veronica was closed down by Dutch officials in 1975, and Capital's frequency was moved. In the late 80’s there was a movement to create greater choice for UK radio listeners, so Capital’s medium wave frequency was given over Capital Gold. The FM frequency station was given a relaunch and named Capital FM. At the end of 2005, Capital decided to cut down the number of adverts to two per break in an effort to keep listeners. In January 2006, the station was relaunched under its old name Capital Radio because many listeners were tuning in on the internet, television or DAB instead of FM. The line-up of presenters and format were changed, but the move wasn’t as successful as the controllers had hoped. Modern-day Capital has the motto ‘The Sound of London’, and goes by the name Capital 95.8. A marketing campaign consisting of outdoor, cinema, and print ads has seen listening figures go up. Past DJs and presenters include Chris Tarrant, Pete Tong, Neil Fox and Kate Lawler. Popular fixtures are Johnny Vaughan’s week day breakfast show, Lucio’s drivetime slot, Bam Bam’s evening programme and Myleene Klass’s Sunday evening segment. |
